1. How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is a procedure that involves the stimulating of anatomical points on the body with 'thinner than hair' needles. Acupuncture views the person as a whole being to identify the source of an illness rather than the symptom of that illness. After identifying the source of illness, the practitioner balances and restores the flow of energy (Qi) in the patient, so that the body can heal itself naturally. In terms of Western medicine, studies show that acupuncture may alter the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain, affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation, immunity, blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature. Acupuncture can be used as a primary method of treatment or can be used in conjuction with Western medicine.
